Starting a new career

Starting your career when you have little or no experience

Everyone starts somewhere. Here's how to find direction and show what you can already offer.

You probably have more to offer than you think

Being reliable, learning quickly, communicating clearly, and helping others are valuable at any level. Look at what you've done in everyday life, at school, or in your community, and notice where these strengths appear.

Explore before you decide

You don't need to know your whole career path today. Read about a few different roles and, if you can, talk to people who do them. Ask what they enjoy, what's difficult, and how they got started.

Take one small step at a time

Large goals are easier to reach when they're broken into smaller ones. For the next month, you might:

  • Choose two or three kinds of roles to learn more about
  • Write a simple first version of your resume
  • Read ten job descriptions and note what they have in common
  • Practice introducing yourself in under a minute

Want help putting this into practice?

Tell us a little about yourself and where you'd like to go. No technical knowledge or long application needed.
