Understanding the hiring process

What actually happens after you apply for a job

The hiring process can seem mysterious. Here are the stages most applications go through.

The usual stages

Every employer is different, but many follow a process like this:

  • Application: you send your resume and any requested information.
  • Screening: someone checks whether your background fits the basic needs of the role.
  • First conversation: often a short phone or video call.
  • Interviews: one or more conversations, and sometimes a practical task.
  • Decision: references may be checked, and an offer may be made.

Why it can take so long

Silence doesn't always mean bad news. Several people may be involved, and they're often balancing hiring with their regular work. It's fine to send a short, polite follow-up after a week or two.

Keep track of your applications

A simple list of where you applied, when, and what happened next helps you follow up on time and spot patterns. If you get few replies, look at your applications. If you get interviews but no offers, focus on interview practice.
